{"id":5131,"date":"2022-02-24T16:19:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-24T14:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kamoacopper.com\/?p=5131"},"modified":"2024-07-19T12:24:34","modified_gmt":"2024-07-19T10:24:34","slug":"kamoa-copper-to-increase-processing-capacity-by-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kamoacopper.com\/en\/kamoa-copper-to-increase-processing-capacity-by-21\/","title":{"rendered":"Kamoa Copper To Increase Processing Capacity By 21%\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Phase 1 and Phase 2 concentrators projected to produce a combined total of 9.2 million tonnes of ore<br \/>\nper year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>KOLWEZI, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, 24 FEBRUARY 2022<\/strong> &#8211; Kamoa Copper has approved a debottlenecking<br \/>\nplan that will increase the combined design processing capacity of the Phase 1 and Phase<br \/>\n2 concentrator plants by approximately 21%, to 9.2 million tonnes of ore per year (Mtpa) from 7.6 Mtpa,<br \/>\nonce steady-state production is achieved at both concentrators.<\/p>\n<p>The de-bottlenecking initiative is planned to boost Kamoa\u2019s Phase 1 and Phase 2 annual copper to more<br \/>\nthan 450,000 tonnes by Q2 2023 \u2013 positioning the company as the world\u2019s fourth largest copper<br \/>\nproducer.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Farren, Kamoa Copper&#8217;s CEO, said: &#8220;The Kamoa Copper Mining Complex is blessed with an<br \/>\nincredible endowment of high-grade copper resources. Given that our underground mine development<br \/>\nand ore production are both progressing well ahead of schedule, the plant expansion will allow the<br \/>\noperations team to process significantly more high-grade copper ore directly from the Kakula Mine in<br \/>\nthe years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur orebody has a huge advantage in allowing us to adapt our mining cut-off to mine larger tonnages<br \/>\nvery efficiently, while maintaining grades above a desired level. The expansion also provides the team<br \/>\nwith the flexibility to utilize our surface stockpiles, for which the mining is already paid for, that totalled<br \/>\nmore than 4.4 million tonnes grading 4.61% copper at the end of January.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Steve Amos, Executive, Projects at Kamoa Copper commented: &#8220;After successfully operating the Phase 1<br \/>\nconcentrator for more than eight months, we&#8217;ve identified a number of relatively minor modifications to<br \/>\nthe concentrator that should increase ore throughput from the current design of 475 tonnes per hour to<br \/>\n580 tonnes per hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We expect the de-bottlenecking project to cost approximately US$50 million and take approximately<br \/>\n12 months to complete. These modifications will allow the team to consistently operate the concentrator<br \/>\nplant at the increased throughput without compromising plant availability, copper recovery<br \/>\nor copper concentrate grade,\u201d said Amos.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the Phase 2, 3.8-Mtpa concentrator plant is almost complete, with early-stage<br \/>\ncommissioning activities underway. Initial copper concentrate production and hot commissioning of the<br \/>\nconcentrator with first ore are both scheduled for April 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Engineering and early works for the Phase 3 expansion, including a new box cut and twin declines to<br \/>\naccess new mining areas, is progressing quickly. A third, significantly larger concentrator is being<br \/>\ndesigned and is expected to be commissioned in Q4 2024.
